I can't believe it's already November. Time is flying! I have been working on going through the huge collection, assisting teachers with technology, coordinating projects and planning some small changes in the LC until we make more large scale ones. The circulation desk is now a thing of the past, along with traditional library spaces.
There was a lot of unused space by the circulation desk. I sectioned the desk into a couple of pieces in order to use those desks for self-checkout later. We are waiting on the electrician to run wires. I think providing more fluid access to checking out books will help increase book checkout at ROHS. Also, since we have less assistance in the Learning Commons than in the past, this will help with student traffic because now they can do it independently.
Below are some photos that were taken before the desks were disassembled. Before we decided to make this change, the area behind the desk was a teacher zone only. However, there is really nothing in the area that is off limits to students. So, this area was opened up.
Goodbye pink bench and hello open space. : ] For now, the three desks from self-checkout will be placed here. The ROHS Learning Commons is changing it up to promote active learning and embrace technology. It's a slow process, but it is a force and will be moving forward every day. I recently read this on a website I came across and I think it helps explain what we are trying to do.
"Teaching methods are evolving with classes employing group projects and individual work along with lectures – it’s not just instructors teaching – peer-to-peer learning is on the rise. Yet both students and educators still face the challenge of having to operate in facilities built for dated ways of learning and teaching. "
We hope to change that. Notice the theme? Cha cha cha chaannnges.
The space behind the circulation desk is open. I put some existing furniture there for students and staff to work on. Check out Ms. Dean hanging out in the LC getting some work done while her classes Career Cruise with Ms. Kaza. Feel free to come on down and lounge/work in the new space!
